How to Spike Really Long Hair

Spiky hair is a staple for some punk, emo and scene styles. While it's true that the longer your hair is the harder it is to spike, it is not even close to being impossible. All that's required to spike really long hair is a consistent, quality technique paired with some good old patience. The key to nailing the spikes so that they stay up without falling down later is to invest in some seriously strong hair product-- specifically, hair glue.

Instructions

Take a shower and wash your hair as usual. When you get out, squeeze all of the excess moisture from your hair with a towel.

Brush your hair out so that it doesn't have snags and is easy to work with. Take a small section, about 1 1/2 inch wide, and run your fingers through it while holding it straight up off of your head.

Apply an extremely heavy-duty hair product designed for hold, such as hair glue. Run hair glue through the section of hair, continually running your fingers upward through section in a spike shape. Twist the hair into a point as it dries.

Hold the spike in one hand and a hairdryer in the other, using the cool setting to blast the spike and dry the product. Add more hair glue as necessary. Do not let go of the spike until it is standing on its own.

Repeat for your entire head, going through one section at a time. When each spike has been formed, spray the entire 'do down with some heavy-duty hairspray to offer even more hold.
