Punk Hairstyle Ideas

Punk rock dates back to the 1970s and is a post-modernist reaction to the mass commercialization of popular music in the early 1970s. Until that time, rock music had been a post-modern rebellion against authority and standard business culture. By the 1970s, the music industry had begun to design music for consumption and profits. Punk was a reaction against that trend. Punk fashion resulted from the music, and hairstyles were a big part of that fashion sense.

The hairstyle most often associated with punk rock is the Mohawk. The Mohawk originated as a traditional hairstyle of the Mohawk tribe of Native Americans. The tribe would shave both sides of the head, while leaving a strip of hair down the center of the head. The hairstyle was expanded and made popular by punk rock. Mohawks can be worn up or down, and can be grown to extreme lengths.

Mohawks can be done either as flat hair or as spikes. In addition, hair can be stood straight on end either as softer spikes or as collections of large, hard spikes. Spiked hair can be of any length, but short hair is easier to spike. Variations of spiked hairstyles are common in punk fashion, including spiking only the top of the head or one side. In some cases, people spike the hair on the front of the head, but leave the back looser and more natural.

Punk hairstyles are often characterized by exotic colors. Often, these colors are unnatural and clash, like purple and yellow spikes. In many cases, hair is dyed a deep blue-black with bright colors as accents.

Many punk hairstyles use unusual ways of alternating long and short hair. One extreme is the Mohawk, with long hair in the center of the head and the sides shaved or cut very short. Other styles leave the bangs and front of the hair long, while cutting the back very short. In other cases, the hair on one side of the head is long, while shaved or cut short on the other side.

Most punk hairstyles require the use of styling products. Tall spikes may require wax, gel, mousse and hairspray. Even short spikes require a significant amount of hair products. Experimentation with the type and quantity of product can produce some new and unusual looks.
