Most hair-related advertisements and products are aimed at women. But men can have just as much fun with their hair. Men who enjoy an edgy, alternative look can style their hair into one of a variety of spike hairstyles. Often these styles require just a short trip to the barber and a few easily procured supplies.
Textured
The textured style works well on men with all hair lengths. It is a mussed, tousled look, not an unwashed, unkempt look. The textured style is acceptable for the office, school and going out. All that's required is a styling product such as wax or putty. Work a small bit into your fingers, then run your fingers through your hair. Don't worry if it looks uneven; that's the point. Mess up your hair, or grab small clumps of hair and swirl them in opposite directions. For a little bit of height, pull your bangs up and away from your forehead. This style can be beneficial for men with thinning hair; hair near the patchy areas can be fluffed up to mask thin spots.
Short and Spiky
Best for men with short-to-medium length hair, hair should be scissor-cut and left different lengths (layered), creating an extremely low-maintenance look that is simply wash-and-wear. Once toweled dry, just rake your hands through your hair and go. If prone to frizz, work in a mousse or gel, but the hair should still be in slight disarray. For variation, pull and twist at sections of the hair when wet for them to dry at different angles. This style can benefit men with tall foreheads; pull a few clumps of bangs down toward your eyes and let them dry.
Fanned Mohawk
Men who enjoy the edgy, punk look of professional skateboarders, emo musicians and young actors can emulate the style with the fanned mohawk. Men who have become attached to their hair will have to commit to losing some of it. The fanned mohawk requires men to shave the sides of their heads entirely, leaving the top and back long. To style, wet it and then blow dry. When dry, work a thick, heavy styling product such as wax into the hair, pulling your hands from the root through the end, until it stands up straight. Work from your forehead to the nape of your neck until your hair stands straight up. For a more dramatic variation, apply more gel, gather hair in clumps and work it into spikes from the front to the back of the head. One benefit of this style is that it washes out in the shower, so if the man has an important, non-mohawk-event to attend, he can simply tie his hair back in a low ponytail and be on his way.
