How to Make Waves in the Hair With a Flat Iron

Flat irons don't have to leave your hair flat or straight. They can be used to create both soft, natural-looking and tight, uniform waves, depending on your preference and technique. Some irons come with crimping or styling plates for even more options in putting a wave in your hair, but even flat plates can be used to create a large range of looks.

Instructions

Looser, Softer Waves

    1

Shampoo your hair to get rid of all excess oil and styling products. Blow-dry your hair so it's completely dry.

    2

Rub a heat protector styling product on your fingertips (gels or spays work equally well) and run it through your hair.

    3

Separate your hair into small sections, using your fingers. Clip the top layers away from the rest of the hair with barrettes, so you can comfortably work from the bottom layers up to the layers near your part.

    4

Slide one section of your hair between the flat iron plates, near the root of the hair. Grip the flat iron more firmly than you would a curling iron, but softly enough so that the hair can slide between the plates easily. Slide the flat iron down the length of your hair, slowly twirling it around. Twirl languidly for large, gentle waves, or twirl the hair more tightly for tighter waves. Employ varying sizes of flat irons, if you'd like varying sizes of waves; the larger the iron, the larger the wave.

    5

Flip your head upside down so the hair falls in front of your face in a wavy mass. Scrunch the hair with styling cream. Stand upright and run your hands through your hair to smooth it--do not use a brush, or you will ruin the waves. Spray the hair with hairspray to keep it set in the way you like, or put some hair polish on your fingertips and run them through the hair.

Tighter, More Uniform Waves

    6

Spritz water on your clean hair until it's slightly damp. Braid the hair, in cornrows or smaller, tighter braids for tight waves, and looser, thicker braids for larger, looser waves.

    7

Run the straightening iron down your braids until they're dry.

    8

Unbraid your hair. Put a slight amount of hair polish on your fingertips and gently run it through your hair, until the waves are smooth.
