Step-by-Step Short Black Hairstyles

Hair styles for black women have evolved over decades and currently there is an undeniable trend in short styles. Some black women have opted out of chemically straightening their hair and have gone "natural" with the styling of their hair. Others have continued to or begun relaxing their hair, which is straightening it with chemicals. Whether you have decided to wear your hair natural or relaxed, colored, cut low with clippers, buzz cuts, sisterlocks, and relaxed styles are a few options available for styling short black hair.

Most recently made popular by model Amber Rose, dyed low and bald fades are modern alternatives to unrelaxed hair styles. This style should begin with either a low or bald fade hair cut. In order to achieve a low or bald fade, begin by scissor cutting your hair down to the scalp. Then, brush downwards, following your hair's natural pattern. Using clippers, cut hair upward, starting at your ear, to the crown of your head. Continue to cut hair upward from the hair's edge to the center until the hair is even, to the lowness you desire. Follow the cut with a colored dye ranging from blond to black. Though the hair ends up extremely short, you should end this style with a conditioning treatment, followed by an oil moisturizer or sheen for the finishing touch.

Unlike traditional dreadlocks, sisterlocks offer a different standard in natural hair design for the black woman. Thinner than dreadlocks, sisterlocks offer a sense of diversity that is not possible with "dreads". The main prerequisite for this style is at least one inch to an inch and a half of natural, un-relaxed hair. To begin creating this style, it is recommended that you start with wet, freshly washed hair. Once it has been towel dried, the hair is then parted into one inch to an inch and a half sections and any type of twisting or locking gel is added to each piece of hair. The hair is then twisted, from root to tip, using a fine toothed comb, or by hand. Once all of the hair is twisted, the hair is then set in small rod rollers and put underneath a hood dryer for up to an hour. After the drying is complete, the rods are removed and oil sheen is applied to the sisterlocks to give them a finished luster. Sisterlocks can also be hot curled or flat ironed.

The most important aspect of wearing relaxed hair is conditioning so that the hair stays healthy and free from breakage. Hence, follow washing your hair with conditioning and covering your hair with a conditioning or showering cap. Once your conditioning treatment is complete, towel dry and comb hair out with a large-toothed comb to prevent breaking. The hair should then be molded with a non-flake, dark-colored gel, by combing it flat from the crown of the head to your ends, using a fine-toothed comb, then sit under a hood dryer for 30 minutes, or until completely dry. Then, an oil moisturizer should be added to the dry mold before you use a fine-toothed comb to comb the mold out. Then, from back to front, part a two-inch row of hair and spray it with your choice of styling spray. Using a one-half to three-quarter-inch size curling iron, curl each piece of hair, making sure it's no wider than two inches when you curl, from your scalp to the hair's edge. Continue moving toward the front of your hair until your entire head is curled. (The additional amount of rows depends on the thickness of your hair.) Spray with an oil sheen and style with a large-toothed styling comb. Finish style with a finishing or light holding spray to keep hair styled longer. (This style has been worn by Halle Berry and Rhianna.)
