Short Mod Hairstyles

The mods are a subculture who peaked in the 1960s. Music--such as soul, beat and rhythm and blues--and riding scooters are among the mod's interests. Another vital thing that defines mods is their haircut. The mods are known for choosing geometric hairstyles, which are often blunt and angular. Most of these iconic styles stem from the 1960s.

The bob initially gained popularity among the mod scene in the 1960s. Legendary hair stylist Vidal Sassoon pioneered the style. The likes of fashion designer Mary Quant wore the style.The bob continues to be a popular style today. While a bob can work with any length of hair, mods generally wear the bob short, with hair cut to jaw length or above, and at an angle. According to Bobhairstyles.biz, mods prefer to wear their bobs with heavy, straight cut bangs, and added texture around the head.

Twiggy, iconic '60s supermodel and fully fledged mod, had a major influence on the popularity of short hairstyles at the time, according to Fiftiesweb.com. Twiggy's androgynous hairstyle continues to be popular among mods today. The style is extremely short and cut to a point at the back of the neck. Hair is then parted on the side, gelled down and worn tucked behind the ears.

The five point cut was another style created by '60s hair stylist Vidal Sassoon. This is a very short haircut still favored by mods today. It is called the five point cut since there are five angles to the style. Bangs are long and blunt, and gradually curve into two points before the ears. Hair is then cut over the ears, resulting in two further points behind the lobes. Finally, the style is cut into a point into the neck, completing the fifth point of this iconic haircut which was worn by the likes of mod supermodel Peggy Moffitt.

The bowl cut is another short mod hairstyle, which is popular among both men and women. According to Fashionencyclopedia.com, the name stems from the style originally being achieved by placing a bowl on the head and cutting around. Mods generally wear the bowl cut to jaw level, and have thick, long bangs which brush the forehead, before gradually curving around the back of the head in one smooth cut. The cut was popularized among mods of the '60s, when the The Beatles and Brian Jones of The Rolling Stones wore this rounded style.
