Long Hair Retro Styles for Guys

Although much focus is spent on women's hair, men's hair is just as fashionable and stylish. Hair is the ultimate, accessible accessory--it can be changed daily to suit the occasion with just a few styling tools already in the home. Men with long hair have an array of style options, including the resurgence of popular styles from past decades. With looks from the '50s through the '80s cropping back up again, men with long hair can sport retro styles with fun and ease.

Everything old is new again with the resurgence of popular retro clothing, music and hairstyles, including the mullet. What was once a joke associated with the South, mullets have come back and been seen on actors, musicians and sports professionals. To achieve a mullet, the sides of the hair are razor-shaved close to the head and the top/back left long. The back may be pulled into a ponytail, braided or the entire hair spiked up.

Once a sign of hippie and drug culture, dreadlocks have made a comeback among long-haired men. Dreadlocks are a great way to express a man's individuality, since so many options exist: thick, clumped dreads; tiny braided dreads with beads or ribbons weaved through, etc. Dreadlocks are actually not the dirty style they're rumored to be, they look best when washed once a week (it helps the hair as well). Dreads are an acceptable hairstyle for men of all ethnicities and cultures.

For long-haired men looking to get a punk edge, the mohawk of the '80s has made a comeback now seen in musicians, professional skateboarders, actors and more. Men who commit to the fanned mohawk will shave the hair on either side of the head, leaving the top long (the longer the hair, the better). After hair is washed and dried, wax or pomade is worked through from scalp to tip until hair stands straight up. Hair may be clumped together to form spikes going down the center of the head. Although the fanned mohawk will wash out in the shower, it may be redone each day.
