Rustic Hairstyles

A rustic hairstyle is ideal for camping, vacationing and work days around the house. It is low-maintenance and casual, yet attractive. Anyone can create a rustic hairstyle within a few minutes. These styles include ponytails, braids, messy buns and use of a bandanna to pull the hair away from the face. Shorter haircuts, such as the straight bob or a simple shoulder-length cut, often become more popular in the summer months. These styles are easy to maintain and comfortable in the heat.

The versatile ponytail is a tried-and-true casual hairstyle, perfect for days on the go, errand-running, camping or vacationing. It can be dressed up or down, can be worn sleek or loose, and can be accessorized with scrunchies, bows or barrettes. Ponytails likewise keep the hair out of your face while swimming, hiking, or performing other strenuous activities.

The "bob" haircut has been a standard since its inception in the 1920s and the Flapper era. Since then, variations on the bob have come and gone, but as of 2010, it is as popular as ever. The bob is best for people with naturally straight or naturally curly hair. Those with naturally wavy hair will have a difficult time taming their hair to follow the lines of the simple cut. In a rustic setting, the bob is a classic, timeless, easy look to maintain.

For those with medium to long hair, braids are an easy and fun option for keeping hair simply, functionally, and attractively styled. From single to double, from French to fishtail, the braid can be dressed up or down, and serves to keep long hair smooth and untangled. A popular and easy style for camping and other casual activities are two loose, simple braids, coupled with a bandanna tied around the head for an especially casual yet attractive appearance.

The messy bun is easily created by beginning with a ponytail. With long hair, it is best to wrap the hair in a long spiral and tuck it in to one rubber band. With shorter hair, it is easier to use two rubber bands, one for an initial ponytail, and a second for the bun after the hair is captured in the ponytail. The messy bun is not intended for perfection, and should not resemble the meticulous ballerina bun. It is a loose, casual style that adds a little creativity to the average ponytail.
