Styles & Products for Thinning Hair

Thinning hair requires specific products and hairstyles to make the most of what you have. Choose the wrong ones and you could end up making your thinning hair look worse. Yet, with the proper cut and styling products aimed at thickening your hair, it is possible to turn thin hair into fabulous hair.

The Facts

Thinning hair is often made to look thinner when kept in the wrong hairstyle or when the wrong styling products are used. Hair that is thinning often times looks thinner when it is kept long. Long, thin hair tends to lie flat against the scalp, showing the skin of your scalp through the thin hair and, in turn, drawing attention to your hair's scarcity.

Styling products that are too heavy can create the same dilemma as they weigh down thinning hair and cause it to also lie flat against the scalp and look thinner. By contrast, shorter styles and products for thinning hair that promote volume will make thin hair look fuller.

Hairstyles

Layered hairstyles work best as they take the weight off your thin hair. Try a cropped or pixie cut for women. This cut, combined with the right styling product, can easily mask your thinning hair.

For men, a short, tapered hairstyle works best. The shorter length will make each strand look longer. If your hair is mainly thinning via a receding hair line you can leave the front area of your hair slightly longer but still blending with the rest of your hair. This slightly longer bang area can be used to strategically lie over the two receding areas to help cover them up.

Shampoos and Conditioners

Proper styling of thinning hair begins with the right shampoo and conditioner. Use lightweight formulas specifically designed for fine/thinning hair. A volumizing shampoo followed up by a spray-in/leave-in conditioner will give your thin hair the cleansing and moisture it needs without weighing it down.

Avoid two-in-one shampoo and conditioners as they use a wax binding agent that will deposit itself on your hair and weigh it down. Also, once a month, use a clarifying shampoo to remove build-up from styling products, which can also weigh down your thinning hair.

Volumizing Products

Mousse, root lifters and volumizing sprays are the three best volumizing hair products for thinning hair. Each is applied to damp hair and their lightweight formula adds volume to thin hair and makes it appear thicker. With root lift you spray the product directly on the root only and lift the roots away from the scalp with your hands or a styling brush while blow drying.

Hair Thickeners

For those who want to make their hair appear and feel thicker, there are hair thickening products that use proteins to essentially fatten up each individual strand of hair. By widening the diameter of each strand the hair you do have will style easier and appear thicker. This product is also applied to damp hair and then the hair is styled as usual.
