How to Use Children's Hair Curlers

Parents sometimes use sponge curlers on children's hair, as opposed to hot rollers which can be too hot. Sponge curlers are flexible and soft enough to sleep in overnight. They are ideal for children because parents can insert them into wet hair right after a bath or shower, eliminating the need for air drying time or a blow drying session. Note that sponge curlers might need to be replaced frequently if used often. Lynne Chapman of bellaonline.com says rollers stay compressed after seasonal use, as the roller shrinks and hair becomes tightly wound, resulting in a difficult removal process.

Instructions

Wash and thoroughly rinse the child's hair with shampoo. Wring hair out in the shower or tub and towel-dry until excess moisture and drips are gone.

Comb hair from roots to ends using the wide-tooth comb. Do not brush wet hair, as this can cause breakage.

Section hair into at least four sections, center parting down the middle of the crown and between top and bottom layers of hair. Secure each section with a hair claw.

Release one section and apply a small handful of mousse or styling gel from roots to ends.

Unhook the locking bar from the locked end of the sponge roller. The bar hangs off to the side while rolling hair into the curler.

Part off a 1-inch section of hair. Place the roller near the ends, and wrap the ends around the roller. Roll upwards, keeping the roller on top of unrolled hair. Stop when the curler cannot roll for another rotation. Clip the locking bar back into locked position on top of curled hair. Let it hang loose.

Repeat Steps 4 to 6 until all hair is in curlers. Secure curls together under a hair net or loosely tied bandanna to keep from snagging or wiggling out of place. Keep in rollers until dry. This might take several hours or an overnight sleep.

Unwrap the bandanna or hair net and release curlers one at a time. Unlock the bar and gently unroll hair. Do not yank or tug hair to separate curlers, as this will ruin the style. Loosen curls with fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Style as desired or hairspray as is to keep curls intact.
