Short Messy Haircuts for Girls

Short haircuts are no longer just a guy thing. Many girls choose a short hairstyle to add interest to their look. If you want a hairdo that looks cute without requiring too much effort to style, consider going short and messy. While this works well with most hair types, it is especially nice for girls who have wavy or curly hair. Learn the options for creating a girl's short and messy haircut, and how to style it for maximum results.

Short haircuts work well with layers. Large, more obvious layers will create volume and add to the messy look. If you have a rounder face, go with a shorter haircut and add the shortest layers at the top. Or you might decide to go short in the back and longer on one side or in front. To do this, cut the front pieces of hair into layers about chin length. Cut the hair in back very short and spiked up. For a one-sided hairstyle, use the same method only cut the longer pieces in the front and sweep the them across your face. This works with bangs as well. You can cut them short and choppy, or long and swept to the side. Bangs help break up a longer face, as do layers.

An unlayered cut can also be messy. With this style, your hair is cut the same length all around the head, except for your bangs, if you want them. If you do desire bangs, they can be cut short and across the forehead in layers or at one even length. Straight cuts can still be messy, especially for those with naturally wavy or curly hair. Those who have straight hair may want to curl or tease their hair for volume. To add more volume and keep an unlayered cut from appearing to elongate your face, apply light highlights through the hair. These add volume instantly even without styling.

To care for your hair, use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner. After your hair has dried, lift the top sections and comb from the top down to the roots to create volume. Brush the hair down if there is too much volume and add mousse or hair gel to hold the hair in place. You can create a chunky look by applying thick hair gel over large sections for an all day hold. Lighter mousse works for a softer look. To give your hair a bedhead hairdo, wash your hair the night before and sleep on it while it is still wet or wear curlers. Don't worry about creating perfect curls; the point of the hairstyle is to be short and messy.
