How to Use a Waver on Hair

A hair waver is a great tool for creating bouncy waves in your hair. Unlike a hair crimper, which makes zigzag waves, a waver creates rounded waves. Hair wavers are commonly designed with three barrels: two round prongs and one larger barrel which clamps the hair. Hair wavers eliminate the hassle of rollers, although the design and construction can seem confusing. Follow a few simple steps to use a waver on your hair.

Instructions

Shampoo your hair. For fuller hair, try using a volumizing shampoo.

Put about a quarter-sized dab of styling gel in your hand. Rub your hands together to spread the gel evenly over your fingers. Run your fingers through your hair to distribute the styling gel.

Dry your hair thoroughly with a hairdryer. Meanwhile, plug in and heat up your hair waver.

Twist the top half of your hair into a bun. Clip it into place to keep it out of the way while you wave the remaining hair.

Grab a strip of hair. Use enough width to match the size of your waver barrels. Comb any tangles out of the strip of hair.

Beginning near the roots, place the strip of hair between the two round prongs and the larger clamp barrel. Allow the waver to clamp into place. Leave clamped down for five seconds (or the amount of time directed in manufacturer instructions).

Continue in this fashion until the bottom half of your hair is waved. Unloosen the hair clip and repeat the waving process until the top half of your hair is waved.

Use your fingers to separate and style your wavy hair. Do not brush through the waves. Apply hairspray to keep your waves in place.
