It wasn't that long ago that it was common to find women out and about the town with a head full of pink sponge rollers and a cute scarf covering their heads. The sponge rollers, also known as foam rollers are easy to use and can be used numerous times. When applying the sponge rollers, keep in mind the look you are going for and remember the longer they are left in, the curlier your hair will be. While sponge rollers are traditionally used on wet hair, they can be used on dry hair and then set with a heavy duty hairspray.

Instructions

    1

Wash and condition your hair as you normally would. If you find that you have a lot of product buildup in your hair, mix one part shampoo to three parts baking soda to create a paste. Apply to your hair like normal shampoo and scrub. Rinse the baking soda with plenty of water. To add extra shine to your hair, rinse your hair a final time with vinegar.

    2

Blot your hair with a towel, but do not dry completely.

    3

Run a wide-toothed comb through your hair. Start at the bottom, using quick strokes. Work your way up the hair. Once you have reached the crown of your head, pull the comb through your hair using single strokes. Using a wide-toothed comb will keep you from pulling out or breaking the shafts of your hair.

    4

Open the sponge roller by pulling back on the plastic clasp. It may be quicker to set your hair if you open all of the sponge rollers at once.

    5

Place the tip of your hair on the sponge roller. If you want your hair to curl under, place the hair over the sponge roller. If you want to create a flip at the ends, place the hair underneath the roller. To do spiral curls, hold the curler sideways and place the tip of your hair over the roller.

    6

Roll your hair slowly. Start at the bottom of your hair and roll the sponge toward your crown. For tight curls, roll the rollers all the way to the scalp. For looser curls, hold the hair away from the head while rolling.

    7

Put the plastic holder in place. It will click when it fits properly. Let the sponge rollers air dry. If you are in a hurry, set your hair using a blow dryer. Remove sponge rollers and style accordingly.
