A bun is a versatile hairstyle--its look can range from functional for household chores or getting your hair out of the way to sophisticated for a night out on the town. There are many variations of the bun hairstyle, and all are easy to make. A new, easy way to make a standard bun is by using a sock.

Instructions

    1

Prepare the sock. This will require the destruction of it, so use one that is clean, but not needed. To prepare it, put it on your foot. Once there, roll it down from the top as if you were rolling down nylons. Once the rolled sock reaches the arch of your foot, take it off--making sure to keep it in the rolled position.

    2

Cut off and discard the toe of the sock. You should be left with a rolled-up sock. Put it aside for a moment.

    3

Comb your hair thoroughly. Make sure it is straight and smooth. Spritz it with water to create a sleek look as well as making it more pliable, but don't over saturate or soak your hair.

    4

Use the hair tie to make a ponytail. Place the ponytail where you want the hair bun to sit. For a more elegant look, position it on the back of your head, near the nape of the neck, and for a more casual look, position it higher.

    5

Slide your ponytail through the rolled sock. Make sure that it retains its rolled shape, and push it against your head, next to your hair tie.

    6

Spread the ponytail over the sock evenly. To do this, split the ponytail in half and cover the upper half of the sock with half of your hair, and cover the lower half of the sock with the remaining portion of your ponytail. This should cover the entire surface of the sock. It will be easier if you tilt your head forward so that the sock is pointing upward. Let gravity work with you.

    7

Use your other hair tie. Fashion it so it goes over and then behind the sock. It will be positioned almost directly over your first hair tie. This will hold the hair covering the sock in place. This will also result in the ends of your hair pointing outward from behind your bun.

    8

Take small sections of the exposed ends of hair and twist them clockwise along the underside of the bun. You will be shoving them into the back of the sock, hiding them from view. Bobby pin the exposed hair in place to keep it from coming out. Position the bobby pins from the outside, pointed inward, making sure to secure them behind the sock and bun--never piercing the sock.

    9

Continue in a clockwise fashion, stuffing the remaining hair under the bun, until all the hair has been hidden. Finish by spraying the hairstyle with hairspray to ensure the bun stays secure, and that you won't experience strands of hair freeing themselves from the bun.
