How to Spike a Mohawk

Spike your Mohawk up as tall as possible if you are looking to make an intense and aggressive fashion statement. This hairstyle trend became popular in the 1980s when bands such as The Sex Pistols wore it with denim, leather and spikes all over the United Kingdom and then over to the United States. Thousands of rebellious teens followed suit and did their up the same way as their idols. If you are looking to spike your hair into a Mohawk, be aware that there are a number of media that can be used to get the look to stand up.

Instructions

White Glue

    1

Use a readily available water-based white glue that can be found at department stores or art-supply stores. There are many types and brands available including Elmer's Glue, Aleene's Tacky Glue and Scotch Craft Glue. Products can be purchased in different thicknesses depending on how much strength that you need. Thicker hair or very tall styles will require a heavier solution.

    2

Start with dry hair and spray it with hair spray to create a base. Stand that base up as much as possible.

    3

Apply the glue to the ends of the base at the tips of the hair and allow to dry. Barring a rainstorm or random soaking, your spikes should survive just fine. For an extra layer of hold, apply hair spray to the style also.

Professional Glue

    4

Use a commercially available spiking glue or gel to make the Mohawk stand tall. There are many brands available that are designed to produce extra-hard and strong results and increase the level of texture on the hair. This is a more expensive solution, but many people prefer professional products in their hair. Available products include Paul Mitchell's XTG Extreme Thickening Glue, Joico's ICE Spiker Water Resistant Styling Glue and got2b's Styling Spiking Glue.

    5

Create a base with hair spray and use the professional-grade glue in the same way that you would use the white glue. Apply the glue to the tips of the hair.

    6

Be aware that the glue is meant to be strong. You will not need as much professional-grade glue as you would white glue.

Gelatin

    7

Use gelatin to create the Mohawk look. Any brand of food-grade gelatin will suffice. Stores often sell their own brands.

    8

Pour a small amount of gelatin powder into a bowl (the size of a quarter or a 50-cent piece) and then slowly drip water on it until it is thick and gel-like.

    9

Put the mixture into the microwave and cook it at five-second increments to create a stronger gel. Keep an eye on the thickness. The thicker the better, depending on the height of the style and thickness of your hair.

    10

Apply the mixture to dry hair and shape to desired height. Use a hair dryer at a medium temperature to dry the style. Apply a strong hair spray to help to set the style and provide extra strength.
