How to Sanitize Hair Brushes

Your hairbrush can collect dirt, skin, debris, shampoo residue and chemicals from hairspray, gel and other styling products. Bacteria also begins to grow on the hairbrush if it isn't sanitized regularly. Regular cleaning and sanitizing of your hairbrush is not only essential for maintaining healthy hair and scalp, but it also helps the hairbrush and bristles last longer.

Instructions

Use a fork to gently pull out the trapped hairs in the bristles before sanitizing your hairbrush. Run a comb through your hairbrush from the base outward to eliminate any remaining caught hairs.

Combine 1/2 cup of water and 1/2 cup of bleach in a basin or bowl. Soak your hairbrush in the mixture for up to one hour, which will completely sterilize it. Rinse the hairbrush thoroughly, place it on a towel and allow it to air-dry.

Put your hairbrush in a dishwasher and add 1 tsp. of bleach along with the regular amount of dish detergent. Run the dishwasher at full cycle to disinfect your hairbrush.

Fill a sink with hot water and add 2 capfuls of shampoo and 1 tsp. of baking soda. Submerge your hairbrush and allow it to soak for several hours or overnight. Use an old toothbrush to clean the bristles. Rinse your hairbrush in cold water. Repeat weekly.
