Styles of Braids for Men

There are many different styles of braids for men. If you would like to try a braided style, head to a local stylist who is experienced in the art of braiding, especially for something complicated like cornrows. Cornrows, micro braids and braids at the back of the head are a few different ways that men often sport braids.

Cornrow hairstyles are characterized by tiny braids that are braided extremely close to the scalp. Cornrow styles for men have no limitation; they can be designed in any desired way. The stylist braids the cornrows in the hair, keeping them close to the scalp and if desired, creates braided designs, such as zig-zags, curves, straight lines, circles or a combination of these. According to the Thirsty Roots website, cornrows are the most popular kinds of braids for men.

Micro braids are tiny braids also known as "invisible braids" because they are so small. Unlike cornrows, which are braided against the scalp, micro braids hang loose and away from the scalp. Micro braids can be combined with cornrows for a different style. For example, the stylist creates a cornrow design at the scalp, leading to a myriad of micro braids that hang down off the head. If desired, she adds beads to the ends for a unique look. The stylist leaves the micro braids down and free-flowing or pulls them back into a ponytail or any other desired style.

A traditional braid style for men is to simply wear one long braid at the back of the head. The stylist gathers all the hair at the back of the head and forms a braid, secures the ends and leaves it to hang down the back. Another style is known as "rat tail braids." According to the I Love India website, a rat tail braid is actually a type of mullet and is designed around the mullet hairstyle. To create the style, the hairstylist keeps the hair short in the front and around the sides but longer in the back. The hair is braided in the back and falls down the neck.
