How to Properly Use Bobby Pins

The bobby pin can serve an important purpose in a variety of hairstyles, even with its diminutive size and basic shape. Not only can bobby pins hold stray wisps of hair back away from your face, but you can also use them to anchor updos. Use only one bobby pin or a number of them together to grasp and hold hair exactly where you want it. When you properly use bobby pins, they will hold your hair tightly all day.

Instructions

Prepare your hair for using the bobby pins by combing or brushing it to remove all the tangles and make it smooth.

Apply hair gel to your hair if you wish, to help hold it in place with the bobby pins.

Pull your hair back or up as you wish to style it, combing through the pulled-back hair one more time to make it smooth. Hold your hair section with one hand.

Grasp a bobby pin in the other hand and insert your index finger between the top and bottom wires of the pin to separate them. As you separate the wires, work your finger between them toward the bend in the wire to hold the bobby pin apart.

Continue holding the section of hair in one hand while you insert the open bobby pin with your other hand. Push the opening of the bobby pin around the hair with the top wire of the bobby pin over the hair and the bottom wire of the bobby pin under the hair (just above your scalp). Push the bobby pin tightly into place over the section of hair and release it. It should stay securely over your hair section.

Add a second bobby pin to the hair section using the same technique, except angle this bobby pin toward the first bobby pin and cross the two pins. Crossing the pins will hold them more securely in your hair.

Continue adding additional bobby pins to your hair until you achieve the style you desire.

Spray hairspray over the style to hold it, if you wish.
