How to Make Dreadlocks With Fine Thin Hair

Thin, fine hair can be very difficult to manage. Keeping curls, body and bounce seem to be a real challenge when you have limp hair. Creating dreadlocks when you have fine hair can also be difficult, although not impossible. When making the dread locks, your hair will appear shorter than it actually is. This is normal and has to do with the process used to create the lock. Wax your dreadlocks regularly to keep the locks healthy and together.

Instructions

Use hair clips to divide your hair into manageable sections: front, back, sides and bangs. Start at the back of the head, at the crown.

Grab a finger-width section of hair and comb through, starting at the scalp and working toward the end of the hair. Remember that you will be working in layers. Start with the top layer, and then work your way down to the hairs at the nape of your neck.

Place the fine-toothed comb at the end of your hair and push back towards your scalp. Repeat on the same finger-width section of hair until you have created a messy knot at the scalp. This is the beginning of the lock. Repeat across the back of your hair.

One at a time, grasp each new lock at the scalp. Holding the lock between your thumb and index finger, twist to the right, while working your way down.

Clip the new knotted hair to the top of your head, and move on to the hair beneath. Stagger the dreads as you work. Think of how a brick wall is staggered when working, and aim for the same look. Once the back of your hair is complete, move on to the sides, and then to the bangs, working in the same fashion.

Apply a small amount of hair wax on your thumb and index finger and apply it to the individual locks. Twist the hair between your fingers, moving from the scalp to the tip. This will help keep the lock in tact. Reapply the wax every six weeks.

Roll the new locks between your palms. This will make the locks tighter and help them grown together to create the typical dreadlock.
