Short Spikey Hairstyles for Girls

The idea of long hair being a sign of beauty is a thing of the past. More and more women are shedding their long locks and going for shorter, daring hairstyles. Not just for tomboys and women of a certain age anymore, short, spiky hairdos are making waves.

Synonymous with Winona Ryder and her Indie queen image, the pixie cut has been a short hair staple for generations. Mia Farrow may have introduced this to us in the 1960s but Ryder made the short, spiky, whimsical cut infamous.

Cut relatively close to the neck, the pixie cut works well with medium bodied hair, as hair that is too curly may form tight, unmanageable curls.This look works best for those with oval shaped faces who aren't afraid to accentuate their neck, ears and jawline. Worn with or without product, this short, spiky style allows you to be both ethereal and sexy.

The short crop is sort of like the wild cousin of the pixie cut. Often left longer at the top (or the bang), the short crop has a bit of a punk edge to it. Ask your stylist to go closer at the nape of the neck; add short layers (starting at 2 inches) throughout and leave the top of the hair a bit longer. Add a little product or tousle it when you hop out of bed and you have a look that rivals trendsetters like supermodel Agyness Deyn.

Coined by 2010 American Idol competitor Lacey Brown, this hairstyle is an emo take on the short spiky hairdo. A combination of the short shag and the pixie, this hairstyle takes the idea of short and spiky to a new realm.

For this look, hair is cut short in the back but long enough so that the back of the hair sits flat. Hair at the crown of the head is then cut short to allow it to stand up and spike out. Layers are cut unevenly and irregularly. Bangs are often side-swept, framing the eyebrow.

The look works well on medium bodied, straight hair and looks excellent on oval and heart shaped faces. Keep in mind it does require a lot of work to maintain and should be worn by those with enough edge to pull it off.
