Simple Ways to Do Medium Hair

Medium-length hair is very versatile. Almost all hairstyles, including ponytails and braids, can be adapted to medium hair.

Some of these hairstyles can be completed in minutes, while others involve a longer process. Experiment with your hair and discover which styles suit the shape of your face and express your personality and fashion sense.

A ponytail is a very easy, versatile hairstyle. Beauty magazines provide instructions so you can create the different variations of ponytails found on fashion show runways.

To create a basic ponytail, pull your hair into one section and use an elastic tie to secure it. You can create a ponytail higher on your head or sport a low ponytail by simply tying your hair at the nape of your neck. If you want to take a cue from the 1980s, move the ponytail slightly to the side of your head and secure it with a brightly-colored scrunchy.

Use your hair tie to express your style and fashion sense. You can tie your hair with a silk ribbon, faux-pearl necklace or a colorful scarf.

If you have layered, medium-length hair, some of your hair may slip out of the ponytail. Secure the hair with bobby pins.

The "half-up half-down" hairstyle is a variation on the ponytail. Gather the top layer of your hair into one section. Make sure that most of your hair still falls over your neck and shoulders.

Secure the hair with an elastic tie or ribbon. You can curl or braid your tied hair to add a different dimension to your style. If you want to create a fairy tale-type of look, tie colorful ribbons to the hair elastic. The ribbons streaming down your hair creates a beautiful effect.

Braided hair is a pretty and intricate option for medium-length hair. There are many different types of braids that are suitable for medium and long-length hair. You may need to experiment with braids, as your hair may be too short for some of the styles.

To create a basic braid, divide your hair into three sections. Layer the third strand over the second strand and under the first strand. Repeat this process until you reach the ends of your hair. Secure the braid with a hair tie.

If you want to create complicated, intricate braids, look for instructions in books, beauty magazines and on the Internet.

Curling your hair may be a bit more time consuming than other styles, but it's a good option if you want to wear your hair loose over your shoulders.

If you already have curly hair, accentuate and tame your curls. Blow-dry your hair and add hairspray or cream products created for curly hair.

If you have straight hair, use a curling iron. You can use thinner rods to create tighter "spiral" curls or a wider curling rod for looser waves. Set your curled hair with a few blasts of hairspray.

Before you find the proper curling iron and product for your hair and perfect your technique, your curls may straighten out in a few hours. Practice your curling technique and read product reviews to find the best gels, creams and sprays to keep the curl in your medium hair.
