How to Use a Curling Iron to Create Waves

Wavy hair is a carefree, sexy hairstyle that takes little time or effort to attain. Waves look great on a variety of hair types and lengths, making it a very popular hairstyle. While there are many ways to get wavy hair, the easiest method is by using the curling iron. The curling iron method of even allows for re-do's if a particular section doesn't turn out perfect the first time.

Instructions

Choose the curling iron wisely. For loose waves, the best curling iron size to use is a 1-inch or bigger barrel. Curling irons smaller than that will create tight curls, not waves.

Heat it up. Depending on hair texture, heat the curling iron to the medium or high temperature. It's always possible to go back after a test curl and turn the heat up, so choose medium to begin with if unsure. If curls don't have enough definition, turn the heat up a little bit until the results are satisfactory.

Apply styling product. While styling product is not necessary for creating waves, some prefer to use it to hold the waves. If using a styling product, stick with something that is light and touchable, such as a light hold gel or mousse. Waves are meant to be carefree, so avoid making the hair appear over-styled.

Pull together a section of hair about 1- to 1 1/2-inches wide, and about 1-inch long.

Wrap the section of hair around the barrel of the curling iron. Start by wrapping the end of the hair around the curling iron barrel, and roll the section all the way up around the barrel until it is about 2 inches below the roots. For extra waves, twirl the section of hair before beginning to wrap it. Hold for approximately 10 seconds, and then release the hair.

Continue curling medium to large sections of hair until it is all wavy.

Use a light hold hairspray to hold the waves in. Use fingers to separate curls gently.
