Japanese Edgy Hairstyles

Japan is the perfect source of inspiration for anyone looking for fashion with an edge. There are numerous trends at any one time in Japan and many subcultures of Japanese people, all with varying types of dress and hairstyles. Japanese hairstyle trends are all about individuality--a little imagination and some unusual inspiration are all that is required to create an edgy Japanese hairstyle.

Lolita style is very popular in Japan. Lolita style favors an elegant, 18th-century formal look (usually Victorian schoolgirl, complete with parasol) and plays up the innocence of the wearer. Hairstyles are a key component to this style. Hair is either dyed white-blonde or a rich, deep brown or black and is usually cut to shoulder-length.There are different varieties of Lolita style and the hairstyles vary by each type. Sweet Lolitas favor pigtails and bunches as well as big curls. Gothic Lolitas favor poker-straight hair. Hime Lolitas sport the edgiest of all hairstyles that are not for the faint-hearted. This look involves styling the hair like an 18th-century princess. Hair is typically long, teased into a bouffant, curled and then adorned with bows, pearls or flowers.

"Ganguro" (meaning "intensely dark") style is one of the edgiest in Japan. While the translation may bring to mind a Gothic style, the style actually draws heavily on Californian style. Followers of this trend fake-tan their skin to be very dark and bleach their hair to be very blonde, orange or silver-gray. Many followers leave their hair blonde once bleached but a lot take it further and add colored dye. Hair is typically past shoulder length and curled, and white makeup is applied to lips and under the eyes to contrast with the dark tan and often white-blonde hair.

Hairstyles in Japan have been drawing from anime cartoons and video games. Characters like those seen in PlayStation's Final Fantasy series or video games are representative of anime. Hairstyles tend to be sharp, brightly colored and angular. Unusual dyes that give a vivid color are the first step to achieving these hairstyles; getting the hair cut into sharp layers is the next. The hair is then gelled or moussed into different directions to mimic that of an anime character.
