Ingredients in Sebastian Molding Mud

Sebastian Molding Mud was designed to replicate the dirty, matted hair style sported by London youths. The molding mud is a creamy mud-like substance with millions of hair-like fibers designed to form twisted curls, dread locks and other grungy hair styles. Emulsify into hands and run through damp or dry hair, twisting and sculpting the hair to the desired shapes. The hair can be blown dry or air dried.

Water and Emulsifiers

The main ingredient in Sebastian Molding Mud is water, followed by emulsifiers. DEA-Oleth-10 phosphate and DEA-Pleth-3 are emulsifying agents that prevent the separation of ingredients in the product. They also help to add shine to hair.

Sodium lauroyl lactylate is a food-grade emulsifier that is derived from the sodium salt of lactic acid. It adds moisture to skin by penetrating the top dead layers of skin to bring in moisture. It also enables extended fragrance release.

Sucrose fatty acid esters are sugars combined with various fatty acids derived from plants. Molding mud has two sucrose esters--sucrose stearate and sucrose distearate. Both work as emulsifiers. They are derived from coconut or palm oil.

Fats

Molding Mud also contains various fats and acids to increase the flexibility of hair and to keep it together. Dicaprylyl maleate is a derivative of maleic acid that mimics coconut oil, which helps bring shine and softness to hair.

Stearyl Stearoyl Stearate are octadecanoic acids that function as emollients and help with skin conditioning.

The PVP/VA copolymer in the mud helps add flexibility to hair, but also hold hair together. It also permeates through the skin, moisturizes it and keeps moisture from escaping.

Ozokerite is a wax made of hydrocarbons that also works to bind hair together.

Other Ingredients

Propylene glycol is a colorless and odorless liquid that is used as a carrier for other substances in cosmetic products. It is one of the main ingredients in Sebastian Molding Mud.

Other ingredients include: Phenyl Trimethicone; Stearyl Stearoyl Stearate; PEG-90M; Phenoxyethanol; Sodium Benzoate; Potassium Sorbate; Methylparaben; Butylparaben; Ethylparaben; Propylparaben; Fragrance (Parfum); FD&C Yellow No. 5 (CI 19140); D&C Red No. 33 (CI 17200); FD&C Blue No. 1 (CI 42090).
