How to Make Waves With a Straightening Iron

If you want to add texture to your straight hair or go with natural but very lazy waves, look no further than your mid size straightening iron; if you've been using a flat iron to eliminate the frizz in your tresses, you already have all you need to create a wavy hairstyle. With a straightening iron on hand, you don't have to buy a curling iron to make waves. A straightening iron is a flexible styling tool that doesn't just iron out the kinks in your hair--it can add body, waves or curls to your tresses as well. Whether you want tight waves or large bouncy ones, here's how you can use a straightening iron to achieve your desired effect.

Instructions

Switch your straightening iron on and allow it to heat up.

Comb your hair to loosen any snarls. The waves you make will look unattractive if your hair is tangled as your hair will appear matted. Spray your hair with a thermal styling protectant to shield it from the heat of your straightening iron. Take special care that the ends get coated with product to protect against splitting and breaking.

Take a fine section of hair, around 1/4-inch thick and about 1 inch wide or at least no wider than your straightening iron. Clamp down close to the root or wherever you want the wave to begin on the lock of hair. Twist your wrist inwards towards your head and hold this position as you glide the hair straightener down the section of hair. The slower you slide the straightener down your hair, the tighter the resulting wave; for looser waves, slide the flat iron a little more quickly down the hair shaft (see Resources for a video).

Repeat Step 3 until you have a head full of waves. Use your fingers to style your tresses. Stay away from a comb or brush at this point, as you don't want to make your hair full of static nor destroy your newly created waves. Mist your hair with hairspray to help your waves retain their shape for the day.
