How to Use a Flip Curl Iron

A flip curl iron is a styling tool that creates flips and curls in hair. It's usually no more than an inch thick with ceramic plates and an ergonomic design, making it easy to use with just one hand. A flip curl iron is popular among hair stylists because it can create so many different styles with just a twist of the wrist. After a few practice tries, people will think you stepped out of a professional salon every time.

Instructions

Shampoo and condition your hair as usual. Allow to air dry, or blow dry for quicker results. You can use flip curl irons with ceramic plates on wet hair, but it's generally safer on your hair to wait for it to dry before styling with a hot iron.

Turn on the flip curl iron and give it some time to heat up.

Take a half-inch section of hair and spritz lightly with hair spray or styling mousse. A styling product is necessary to help keep the flip or curl intact.

Starting halfway down from the root of your hair, slowly glide the flip curl iron down toward the ends of your hair. When the iron is about two inches from the end, twist it slightly outward away from your face. Continue gliding the iron through to the end of the section.

Continue Step 4 on a few more sections of hair, particularly the ones framing your face. You can do your entire head of hair if you choose, but the flipped hair will be more prominently visible from the front.

Use your fingers to comb out the flips in your hair, making them less angular. Spritz your entire head with a final coat of hair spray to hold the look in place.

Use the flip curl iron to create perfect little curls. Also starting halfway down, flip the iron outward but, instead of letting it go, continue twisting the iron until the hair is wrapped around the shaft of the iron. Glide the iron through; the hair should slide out easily.

Repeat Step 7 on multiple sections. Use your fingers to comb the curls out. Spray them lightly with holding spray or coat with mousse.
