Male Rockabilly Hairstyles

Rockabilly music emerged in the 1950s, a hybrid of country (or "hillbilly music"), blues, Western swing, and the newly popular rock-and-roll sound. With it came a unique style and subculture. Though the rockabilly scene faded in the mid-1960s, the style and music has enjoyed a resurgence since the late 1970s. Today, the rockabilly subculture thrives. One of the most notable markers of rockabilly style is the distinctive hairstyles, especially on men.

Named for the fashionable French-Revolution-era lady-in-waiting Madame de Pompadour, the classic pompadour is the most recognizable of men's rockabilly hairstyles, mainly because of such style icons as Elvis Presley and Robert Gordon. The hair is cut short on the sides and in the back, and kept long on top and in the front. It is then styled to make the front stick up.

There are two main ways to style a pompadour: the first way is to apply gel to wet hair, and then blow dry the hair straight while holding the head upside-down. Once dry, reinforce the pomp with super-hold gel or beeswax. Then, give it a once-over with super-hold hairspray. The other way is slightly messier: Grease up clean hair with pomade -- a sticky substance containing mineral oil, petroleum jelly, and beeswax -- and comb it up and to the front. Once the hair is sculpted to your satisfaction, give it a once-over with the super-hold hairspray.

Sported by many a B-movie cast member, the ducktail was 1950s-Hollywood shorthand for juvenile delinquent. Because of this, it is more widely worn among rockabilly revivalists than it was among rockabilly fans of the 1950s. Like the pompadour, the ducktail involves gobs of grease and lots of combing. Unlike the pompadour, the ducktail features a center part and the hair slicked back on either side of the head until it creates a ridge (which, from the back, resembles the eponymous duck's tail). The front would then hang down in disarray, or in a little cowlick.

The Detroit is a variation on the ducktail, which combines the long back and sides (and the subsequent greased-up back ridge) of the ducktail with the flat top of the crew cut. Think a ducktail without the top wave or hanging bits over the forehead.

The Jelly Roll is another variant on the pompadour. The cut is similar -- short on the sides and in the back, long on top -- but instead of being greased up or back, it is combed towards the front (as in the ducktail) and curled down over the forehead.
