Prom can be one of the most exciting nights of your life. But along with the excitement is the stress of what to wear and how to do your hair. While a trip to the dress store can take hours, some girls obsess for days trying to score the right hairdo. There's no reason to be left in the dark about how to do your hair for prom. Types of Updo's
Updo's come in low or high styles. Low updo's are simplistic and best for heavily adorned dresses. Girls with shorter hair may opt for a low style as it is elegant and an easy solution for their short length. For longer hair, high updo's are great and can be very versatile. For a halter dress or a dress that is fairly simplistic, a more intricate hairstyle is necessary. High updo's work best with loose curls, pinned hair or waves, and low updo's can be done with nearly any hair texture.
Cascading Curls
This hair illusion is quite popular among many young women and can be done low or high. The style entails getting the hair curled in delicate tendrils, and then placing the hair atop the head with curls falling down. This style is ideal for medium to long hair lengths. Shorter hair lengths will find difficulty with this style.
Curl the hair with a curling iron in tendrils. To make the tendrils take a 1-inch wide section of hair and clamp a 1-inch barreled curling iron down on the ends of the section. Curl in a clockwise motion up towards the scalp, and stop within an inch of the scalp. Once all hair is completely curled, gather the curls gently in your hands as if placing them in a ponytail and then clip with a large hair clip so that it resembles a loose bun. Allow haphazard tendrils to randomly fall from the clip. This gives the appearance of voluptuous curls springing from your updo. You can also part your hair to one side to give this style depth.
High Pageant Bun
This high updo style is common in the beauty pageant and prom worlds. The style is simple and can be done on medium to long hair lengths. Part your hair down the middle or to the side. Gather your hair in a high ponytail and brush it tight to is is smooth and not lumpy. Flyaway strands of hair must be tamed before securing the ponytail. Secure the ponytail with an elastic and begin pinning the hair to the base of the ponytail. To do this gather bobby pins and neatly tuck the end of your ponytail into your hair. The last piece of hair should wrap around the elastic to disguise it. Finish this look with hairspray.
Low Chignon
This style is classy regardless of hair length. This is the easiest of styles and is meant for a low or high updo. Part your hair to one side and gather the hair in a low ponytail. Twist the ends of the ponytail into a bun and pin the bun in place. For shorter hair lengths, the bun pieces must be secured with bobby pins. Finish your chignon with hairspray. You can decorate this look with clips or crystals to make it your own. And, of course, this style is compatible with a crown should you be the prom queen.
Textured Curly Ponytail
A textured curly ponytail looks nice with or without a crown and can be worn low or high. This look is achievable for medium to long hair lengths. You'll need hair that has not been washed for at least 24 hours to get the most from this look. Add a texturizing spray or balm to your hair by running your hands through your hair and finger combing the product through. Curl your hair in spirals by wrapping a 1-inch section of hair around the barrel of a curling iron and holding it for 5 seconds. Release the section and spray with hairspray. Once the entire head is curled, gather it into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic. Use a piece of your hair to wrap around the elastic and pin in place. This will disguise the elastic from view.
