Short Curly Layered Hairstyles

Although it may appear to be thick, curly hair is often thin and fragile. The wrong hairstyle and products can weigh your hair down and pull the curls out of place. "Layered" is a style in which hair is cut to uneven lengths, and the style is well suited for short, curly hair. A layered haircut can restore volume, body and bounce to short, curly hair.

Curly hair seems to have a mind of its own. Find a stylist who is experienced with curly hair and who won't try to force it to do things it does not want to do. Layering curly hair allows the hair to be shaped, rather than spreading out sideways into a pyramid, as blunt-cut curly hair is apt to do.

Never allow a stylist to cut your curly hair while it is wet. The shape of the curl will be lost. Even worse, the hair will shrink up when it is dry, probably becoming much shorter than you wanted.

Every head of curly hair is different. If you show a stylist a photo from a magazine or website, there is no guarantee the style will look the same on you. Allowing short, curly, layered hair to go its own way can produce a style all your own.

Your stylist should start by examining your hair to see how it curls and if curls are uniformly tight all over. If a thick layer of hair weighs down the hair underneath it, or if the top layer of hair is drier and frizzier than the rest, that layer should be trimmed shorter than the rest. Trimming this upper layer will free the hair below and restore bounce and volume.

When layering curly hair, the stylist should allow sections of hair to rest straight down in his hand, without stretching out the shape of the curl. A curl is in the shape of a C, and it should be cut at the crest, at the beginning of the C.

Don't let your stylist use a razor to cut your hair. A razor can leave you with frayed ends.

Short, layered curly hairstyles need frequent maintenance that may prove expensive and inconvenient. Since no one knows your hair better than you, don't be afraid to trim your own hair from time to time. Trimming split ends restores buoyancy and shape.

Use cuticle scissors or sharp hair-cutting scissors. Starting at the top of your head, hold a small section of hair straight down---not tight enough to stretch out the curl---twist it slightly, and cut off the split ends below your fingers. Clip the trimmed section out of the way and proceed to the next.

A good layered cut should fall into place after a shampoo without much effort. Blow driers and curling irons may do more harm than good. After shampooing, bend over from the waist and pat your hair gently with a towel.

As you lean forward, apply a touch of mousse or gel, or conditioning or curl-forming lotion, by patting it onto your hair, taking care not to disturb the natural curl.
