You can create longer lasting hairstyles with hard hair curlers to create volume, add curl to straight hair or tame overly curly hair. Magnetic curlers, designed to use with wet hair, are barrel-shaped and hollow. Hot curlers, designed to use with dry hair, are solid and heated in a hair-setter. Learning to use hard hair curlers can enhance your hairstyling techniques.

Apply styling lotion to wet hair and comb through to distribute it evenly throughout the hair.
2Section hair strands according to the size of the curler. If the curler measures 3-inches long and 1-inch-wide, the base of the strand should measure about 1-inch thick and the strand about 2 3/4 inches wide, according to the "Standard Textbook of Cosmetology."
3Wrap the hair around the curler beginning at the end of the strand. Wind the curler and hair strand to the scalp. Pin in place with a hair roller clip. Continue this process until finished.
4Dry hair under a hair dryer or allow to air-dry.
5Remove clips and curlers. To prevent hair damage, remove the clips first and unwind the rollers from the hair strands.
6Brush hair and style.

Preheat curlers according to the manufacturer's instructions. Hot curler setters usually have a dot on the warmer that changes color when the curlers are sufficiently heated.
8Wrap sections of hair the width of the curler, according to "Marie Claire." Wind the curler and hair to the scalp. Secure in place with the pins that came with the hot curler product. Lightly spray with hair spray. Continue the same process until finished.
9Allow the curlers to completely cool before removing them from your hair.
10Remove the pins and curlers gently. Unwrap the curlers; do not pull them from the hair to prevent tangling and hair damage.
11Style hair with brush or fingers according to the style you want.
