Make your medium-length hair wavy by using heated hair implements or certain hair techniques, depending on its natural texture. Those with straight hair find it harder to create and keep waves in hair than those who tend toward slightly wavy or even curly hair. But, regardless of the original texture and cut, many people desire an even, uniform look with hair waves. Or you may opt for the natural, windblown look. It might take several attempts to reach a desirable look, so prepare to practice wavy hair style techniques more than once.
Instructions
- 1
Create a messy look in your medium-length hair. Comb through your damp locks using the pick comb. Never brush your hair when waving, as this straightens it. Spray leave-in conditioner all over your hair. Elizabeth Flahive of "Marie Claire" magazine recommends spraying hair spritz or spray gel on hair to control frizz and hold waves. Flip your hair forward and upside-down to blow dry with the diffuser for a few minutes, leaving hair slightly damp at the end. Curl large sections of diffused hair around your fingers. Do not comb out. Hair-spray to hold the style.
2Design big, fluffy waves using a large-barrel curling iron. Section off 2-inch portions of hair and wrap a section around the curling iron. Roll the iron up to just above the ear or near the roots. Hold for 10 seconds and release the wave. Do not yank the curling iron out of your hair, as this will ruin the style. Repeat until all sections are curled. Mist hair with hair spray, flip head upside-down and loosen curls with fingers. Flip your head to its normal position and spray again to hold the style.
3Scrunch hair to create "beachy" waves. Wash and towel-dry hair. Comb out the tangles using a pick comb. Squeeze a small handful of mousse onto your palms, flip head upside-down and work mousse through hair and up to roots, squeezing the ends of hair up to the roots at the same time. Blow-dry hair with the diffuser attachment, squeezing hair in sections to keep waves from falling out. When nearly dry, stop blow drying, flip your head to the normal position and mist your new waves with hair spray.
