Short Black Spiked Gothic Hairstyles

Creating a gothic hairstyle is much like creating any other hairstyle; the only difference lies in your overall style. Any short hairstyle can become gothic if you have already embraced gothic fashion, makeup and attitude. Create a hairstyle that's a little punk and a little mysterious to complete your look.

Black hair is almost a staple in gothic style. If you have very long hair, cut it short before dyeing. This will keep you from having to buy more than one box of at-home black hair dye. Apply the hair color to your entire head while wearing protective gloves, being careful not to rub the dye into your scalp. When you cut your hair short, you will be able to see more of your scalp; this means patchy dye blobs on your scalp will be visible.

Let the dye sit in your hair for the amount of time recommended on the box, then rinse it out with lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Don't shampoo your hair right away, since this will make the dye fade faster. Instead, add a conditioner to your locks and rinse it out with cold water. The moisture from the conditioner and the cold water will seal the cuticle, keeping the color in.

If you feel confident in your hair-cutting skills, try cutting your hair yourself. However, when choosing a short cut, visiting a stylist is recommended. Imperfections and unevenness will be more prominent in short hair, especially if you are going with a close-cropped pixie style.

When cutting your own hair short, create even, quarter-inch thick sections of hair with a rat-tail comb and clip the remaining hair away. Pull the hair straight out, squeezing the section between your pointer and middle finger, and cut the excess hair along the top. Repeat this for your entire head, ensuring that each section of hair is evenly cut. This will create a base for your style. Once you have evenly cut your entire head of hair, go back in with scissors or clippers and finish your style.

Many short cuts are perfect for spiking. Try a pixie cut with tapered sides that gets longer towards the top of your head. Add gel to wet hair, pulling the tips skyward and twisting the gel into your locks. You can also get a very close-cropped haircut using clippers with a number four attachment all over your head. Add a texturizing gel or spiking glue to wet or dry hair, pulling the strands upwards with your fingers.

If you want a softer style, try brow-grazing bangs that taper into short spikes at the back of your head. You can either create a drastic contrast between the long bangs and short back, or gradually blend your hair to create a more subtle look. While your hair is wet, add a shine serum to your bangs. Blow dry your bangs flat against your face, either straight across your brow or side-swept. For all-day spikes, blow dry your hair upside down in the back. This will cause all of your hair to point upwards. Add a texturizing hair cream, pushing the product upwards in the back while twisting the ends of your hair. Finish the look with a spritz of hairspray.

All-over spiking can be achieved with a short, layered cut. Keep the hair about the same length in the back and on the sides. Blow dry your hair while using a medium-sized round brush, rolling your hair around the barrel so it flips away from your head. Apply a holding wax to your locks, pushing the product upwards from the underside of your hair.
