Simple Victorian Hairstyles for Children

The Victorian age between 1837 and 1901 was a prosperous time named for the popular British Queen Victoria. Oscar Wilde, Charles Dickens and the Bronte sisters penned epic novels and people turned to idealistic, romantic ideas. Hairstyles of the day reflected the ideas of perfection and romance. Children were dressed like dolls and wore their coiffures in styles similar to dolls as well. At your next special occasion, use some simple Victorian hairstyles to make your children feel special.

Long ringlet curls were worn by both girls and boys. These curls were often called "sugar curls" or "Barley curls." Re-create this Victorian look by using a wide curling iron. The barrel should be at least two inches in diameter. Hair should be clean and dry. Divide your child's hair in four to six sections. Clip each section securely to make tight, clean curls. Start at the bottom of the curl and roll the curling vertically to create a sugar curl. If your child's hair doesn't hold a curl well or is very fine, blast it with a quick shot of hair spray. Leave the curling iron on the hair for thirty seconds to a minute to get a good curl. Do this for each section. You could pull some hair back with a large ribbon or a barrette. Oversized bows make sugar curls look beautiful.

Victorian children both poor and wealthy wore bobbed haircuts. To achieve this look, your child will need short hair. The bobbed look is cut at an angle, with shorter angle in the back. Bangs should be worn just above the eyebrows. A Victorian child's bobbed hair cut could be worn straight or curled under. Top this simple look off with a round straw hat. Tie a wide silk ribbon around the crown of the hat and let it dangle down the back.

This Victorian hairstyle was also unisex, although girls often wore theirs a bit longer. The pageboy hairstyle is similar to the bob, but this cut has no angles. Hair is left straight but is cut above the shoulders. There are no layers in this hairstyle. It's worn at an equal length around the entire crown with the exception of the bangs. Bangs are worn extremely short, up to inch above the eye brows. Girls can wear narrow headbands to get a retro Victorian look.
