Styling Tips for Short Thick Curly Teen Hairstyles

Styling thick, curly hair can be easy with the right tools. Teens with short, thick and curly hair can choose from a variety of styles without the hassle of curlers or curling irons. It's easy to create a casual look for the weekends or a polished look for class. The key is in working with your texture, not against it.

The blow drier is your best tool to add great volume to short, thick hair. You have two options when blow-drying: use a normal blow dryer or use a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment. A normal blow dryer, used with a large, round brush, straightens your natural curl, but gives your hair a sleeker look.

A diffuser, on the other hand, dries your hair and prevents frizz without drying out the hair cuticle or straightening your curls. For curly, natural styles, use a diffuser, and for sleek styles use a normal blow dryer.

Volumize any style and preserve curl with a curl enhancer, mousse and blow dryer with a diffuser. Dry your wet hair with a towel, add a dime-sized amount of curl enhancing product and work it in from the roots to the tips. Apply a very small amount of mousse, concentrating on the nape of your neck and the crown of your head. Gently work the diffuser around your scalp with the blow dryer on the lowest setting to protect your hair.

Try out a sleek, straight look when you want to add sophistication to your style. Straight styles are perfect for "second-day" hair, so don't wash before trying this style. Protect the hair follicles from heat by adding a dime-sized dollop of silicone or silk heat-protecting product. Concentrate on the tips of your hair and work toward the middle. Use a ceramic flat iron on the lowest effective setting to straighten 1-inch sections of hair from the root to the tip, starting at the nape of your neck.

The foundation to any lovely hairstyle is a quality brush. Use a medium round brush with natural bristles, such as boar bristles, to add volume while blow drying.

Choosing the right products for your hair texture and length are important if you want to achieve a certain style. To go for a naturally curly look, try a shampoo and conditioner that are specifically formulated to fight frizz and enhance your natural curls. Before styling, choose a non-greasy leave-in product that will enhance curl and give you soft control. Avoid spray gels because these products make any style look dated and unnatural.

For straight or wavy styles, shampoo and condition using products that add volume and help to straighten hair. When using a blow dryer, use products that straighten hair without leaving behind any greasy or sticky residue. When using a ceramic flat iron, always protect your hair from heat damage with a silicone- or silk-based product.
