Teen Hairstyle Instructions

Teenagers are busy people: There is homework, after-school part-time jobs, sports or maybe time to head to the mall, with some texting in between. Teens of all stripes like to experiment with their hair: long, short, braided, 'froed or colored. Allowing freedom of expression with hair seems perfectly normal and certainly a lot less fraught with drama than battles over tattooing or piercing...

Whether or not your daughter's hair is long enough to touch her elbows or just brushing her shoulders, there are several classic hairstyles that have endured over the years. Start with long, straight hair divided by a part down the center, reminiscent of '70s styles. Either make two pigtails that sit low behind each ear or loosely braid and tie with small ribbons.

For an '80s look, braid each section into five or six smaller braids and capture the ends into one ponytail. Use a hair fixer such as aloe vera gel or a non-sticky hair gel to tame wild ends.

Short pixie hairstyles, ala Pat Benetar and even Twiggy, are back. Variations of the '70s shag are also back, with full bangs and longer sections softly cut to provide thickness rather than an abrupt mullet look.

If your daughter has thick or fine hair, a '60s Mia Farrow pixie cut can work. Even a very good barber can do this haircut. To style, wash hair and apply mousse or a non-shiny gel. Comb and air dry.

For styling a shag, after shampooing, lightly blow-dry with a large round brush to plump up the volume. Finger-fluff the bangs to frame the face. Shag styles are asymmetrical by nature, so do not overstyle.

There are many temporary hair colors appropriate even for teen girls. Read labels to be certain that the hair color is not permanent or to cover gray hair. Start with clean hair and apply hair color as highlights to emphasize the eyes and a few streaks randomly throughout the hair to mimic what the sun would do. For example, blonde highlights in brunette hair or even darker hair, if done sparingly, will not be brassy.

For fanciful colors such as purple, pink, robin egg blue and other colors, work with dry hair. Apply bright temporary hair color to the bottom tips of the hair---even dark brown or black Asian hair. You could braid long hair into thin braids and "color tip" the ends in three or four bright colors. Protect colored hair from the sun with shampoos and conditioners with sunscreen or under a scarf or sunhat.
