How to Style Hair Using Barrettes

Barrettes can be both decorative and functional when creating a hairstyle. Whether glitzy for special occasions or simple for everyday wear, barrettes are a versatile hair styling tool.

Select the appropriate barrette for your needs. Both size and style are important. Simple metal or plastic clips are good for everyday wear while sparkly rhinestone and embellished barrettes work well for evenings and special events.

Tease the area of your hair where you wish to place the barrette. This creates volume for the hairstyle and gives the barrette a better grip on your hair. A little hairspray helps the teased area maintain volume.

Part the hair with your fingers. If you are picking up bangs to the side of your face, part on the side you typically sweep your bangs toward. If you are pulling the sides of your hair back to the rear of your head, bring that hair smoothly back with your fingers.

Clip the barrette around the hair. Twist the hair and lift slightly before clipping to add volume and height to the finished hairstyle. If you want the hair to be sleek and flat, do not twist the hair before clipping.

Finish your hairstyle with a bit of hairspray to keep it in place. Repeated use of hair spray on barrettes can accumulate and dull the finish. Be sure to periodically clean the product off your barrettes.
