How to Use Hair Gel Effectively

According to Search Your Love, hair gel is used to create your style and get your hair the way you want it to look. In an effort to make sure you are not damaging your hair, it is important to use a good quality hair gel. Lower quality hair gels will be made with no natural ingredients and over time can cause your hair to sustain significant damage.

Choose the type of hairstyle you want. Examples of hair styles could include bed head, spikes or the slicked straight back look. Different types of gels should be used depending on what kind of look you are going for. A foam-like gel should be used to achieve the bed head look. A medium-strength gel should be used for a spiky look, and a thick gel should be used for the slicked-back look.

Dampen or wet your hair in preparation for application of the gel. Hair gel will hold the hair to the desired style better in hair that is wet.

Squeeze the gel into your hands. Rub the hands together until the gel is warmed up and dispersed evenly over your palms. Squeeze a dime-sized amount of gel into your hands if you have short hair. For medium length hair, use a quarter size, and for long hair, use two quarters size. It may be necessary to experiment with the different amounts of gel necessary to achieve your desired look.

Work the gel from the scalp out to the tips of your hair. Once all of the gel has been worked into your hair, you can style it to meet the look you are after.
