Styles can be broken into three distinct genres for you to chose from.

Scene is the style of clothing and dress that's a softer version of emo mixed with preppy. Scene appeals to many teens because it gives them the ability to express themselves with color, style and texture. Scene cuts are long with choppy layers throughout. Ask your hairstylist for a long cut with face-framing choppy layers and a long fringe in the front that covers one eye. You can play with color, adding bright streaks to bring attention to the layers. Always flat iron your hair so it is stick straight to highlight the texture.

Emo haircuts are more edgy than scene haircuts. If you think an emo haircut is for you, you're probably looking for a drastic cut, either short or long, with razored ends and a variety of lengths, mostly asymmetrical. Emo hair can have shorter pieces at the crown that teens can spray to stand up in the back. Black is the color of choice. Emo style is good for those who love rock and alternative music, and who love to dress in dark clothes to match their dark sense of humor. Ask your stylist for an uneven, edgy and drastic cut to match your emo style.

If scene or emo hair is too much for you, you'll probably want a preppy cut. For girls, this means soft, flipped out layers or long, straight hair. Preppy hair is also a good choice for those who have wavy hair and don't want to have to straighten it daily, as with emo and scene haircuts. For boys, hair is always close cropped and styled with little product. Look for haircuts in mainstream magazines like "Seventeen" and "Teen Vogue" to find fashionable, preppy styles for the real world.
