How to Use Small Rollers on African American Hair

African American hair provides its own styling challenges and may be prone to damage. Using small rollers is a great way to get perfect little curls, but there are some things to keep in mind when using them on black hair.

Instructions

    1

Choose rollers that are cool. Hot rollers may give you a faster style, but it's harder on your hair and long term use can damage it. This is especially true of black hair. You'll also want rollers that are smooth rather than ones with teeth or combs as these can damage your hair too.

    2

Take a thin section of damp hair and comb it out thoroughly to avoid any tangles. Don't be shy about using lots of rollers and only small sections of hair with each roller.

    3

Starting at the end of the hair, gently roll the hair into the roller. Don't worry about pieces falling off. You can get those later.

    4

Place your clip into the hair close to the scalp. You can use end papers if you want to help the curls look even, but it's not required.

    5

Put the rollers next to each other, making sure you're rolling up all the hair. Keep the rollers in straight lines if possible.

    6

Wait until the hair is dry before taking the curlers out. Either wait until the hair dries naturally or use a hair dryer to help the hair dry. Using heat will damage your hair long term.
