Japanese Spiked Hairstyles for Girls

Japanese hairstyles cover a variety of different fashion types. Unique, sometimes colorful, and often eye-catching, many of these styles also incorporate the use of hair spikes (both with long and short hair) to achieve the necessary effect. While some styles require shorter hair, there are others that don't, and if you look it isn't too hard to find a style that suits you.

A look that's common for many Japanese styles is the punk rock spike. Girls who have shorter hair take a liberal amount of hair gel and spike their hair up starting at the bangs and moving back. This look is most common with those whose fashion is either a heavy metal/hard rock sort of look, or those going for a more militaristic look. You can either use enough hair gel to create a hard spike, which makes the spikes stand up straight and stiff, or you can use just enough to make the hair stand up and create a look that's spiked but still soft enough to run your fingers through.

For this fashion style you need to have slightly longer hair (roughly six inches or longer), and either a great deal of hair gel or something with a little more hold like hair wax. Comb your hair out and make sure that it's free of tangles then begin to spike it. These spikes stick off your head at all angles and make your head look like something reminiscent of floating land mines. This style is more common among those who are looking for a punk rock look, rather than something more modern.

Sometimes referred to as liberty spikes, this style is not wholly Japanese but it does make its appearance in certain Asian scenes. Liberty spikes are similar to mine spikes but they're done up like a crown around the head. Some people do a full circle crown and others do a half crown (a tiara look) similar to the Statue of Liberty--hence the name liberty spikes. If you have shorter hair this look can work well with a gothic style but longer hair will convey a harder edged alternative look.
