Kids' hair can pose problems for children and parents alike. Children's hair is usually fine, which means it's prone to flyaways and static. Kids don't always like to have their hair washed and styled, so caring for their hair can become a daily battle. Making sure that you use the right products and styling aids, along with easy-to-maintain hairstyles, can save you a lot of grief when it comes to your kid's hair. Don't let a small thing like your kids' hair become an ongoing fight.

Cutting

Choosing the right haircut for your kid is important. In fact, your child's haircut could be making it harder for you to maintain his hair. Consider your child's level of activity through the day. If he doesn't want to fuss with his hair, a shorter cut may be in order. Curly hair could be layered to create a better shape so that you spend less time trying to tame it. Thin hair looks better in a shorter, more blunt cut rather than long strands. Talk to your kid's hairdresser about the best options for your child's lifestyle and hair type.

Cleansing

Children get into all sorts of messes, so making sure that their hair is kept clean can help you style it more easily. Although you may see rows of children's tear-free shampoo at the pharmacy, that shampoo is not designed for all hair types. If your kids have thicker or curlier hair, then you'll need to use a shampoo made for that hair type. Check the shampoo bottle for conditioner information. Some shampoos have a conditioner built in, but you may need supplemental conditioner to help weigh down your child's hair.

Choosing a shampoo that uses your child's favorite character on the label may make your child more willing to wash her hair; so will allowing her to choose the scent that she likes the best.

When washing the hair, try not to lather up by scrubbing. This can damage the hair and create knots that are hard to comb out later. Combing the shampoo and conditioner through the hair will keep it sleek and manageable. Try adding conditioner only to the ends if you find that conditioner makes your child's hair look flat or greasy.

Styling

Having the right styling aids on hand will eliminate arguments and tears when it's time to comb out and style. For a boy, a comb and a little hair gel to tame his hair into place is helpful. If gel seems too heavy, add a small dollop into a spray bottle, fill it the rest of the way with water, and shake. This will dilute the gel so it isn't so firm.

For a girl, using a leave-in conditioner or detangler while combing her hair can save some tears. Remember that wet hair should be combed, while dry hair should be brushed to avoid breakage. Finally, choose a style that will keep for the entire day. While an elaborate updo might be cute, it might not be the best choice for a girl who plans to play hopscotch at recess.
