A teenager is often willing to experiment with her hairstyle to keep up with the image she wants to project. And whether to become practical in choosing a fitting hairstyle or be a serious follower of trends, it is considered a time in life for making impressions.
African-American teens employ the distinctive appeal of their classic hairstyles and combine other influences coming mainly from celebrities and pop icons. And they try out hybrids of hairstyles that their naturally thick and curly hair can take advantage of.
Hair Braids
Hair braiding is a common and a very popular African-American hairstyle that has evolved into many other looks. In general, hair braiding is done by sectioning the hair into separate strands plaited on top of each other diagonally from top to bottom. A number of African-American teens use micro-braids and variations of it, such as cornrows and box braids, to fit their specific hair textures and facial shapes. Unlike the basic hair braids that can be finished in a few seconds for a medium length hair, micro-braids and other intricate Afro braids require more time and patience. But the resulting hairstyle can be very rewarding as they are sported by many to be looking hip, cool and trendy.
Tight Ponytails
Styling the hair into a ponytail is something that's gaining popularity among African-American teens. Tying the hair reduces the volume of the curls and helps in putting the right volume of the hair in the intended places. There are many ways to work out ponytails with their naturally tight curls. These curls are often styled differently to employ varying looks. And most of these can involve ponytails. The hair may either be directly tied up with optional accessorizing on the sides or the hair is parted into equal sections to come up with thin braids. Then all the braids are pulled toward the back of the head to come up with a neat ponytail with thinly braided strands.
Another option is to employ a similar process, but this time, the thickness and tightness of the braided strands depend on the intended outcome for a crimped hairdo. The hairstyle is prepared by wrapping a satin scarf around the head overnight, or at least a few hours after braiding, then removing the braids to get that crimped look fixed into a ponytail in order to radiate a fashionable volume coming from the crown of the head.
Dreadlocks
Dreadlocks initially rose popularity during the time that reggae music start reaching new heights. And since this kind of hairstyle has significant stories and histories linked with it, it's something that teens get curious about. And other than the fitting hair texture for it, this hairstyle looks good for dark hair---which further adds the appeal for African-Americans. And as some teens love taking time to make themselves look good, such a high-maintenance hairstyle is something that they can really find time to enjoy.
Dreadlocks are coils of hair interlocked in specific ways that results to a matted, knotted hairstyle. A variety of dreadlock inspired hairstyles sprouted as musician and celebrities start adopting the hairstyle. And teens continue to be inspired to glam up such a hairstyle with fashion accessories.
Relaxed Hair
Teens also explore more hairstyles fueled by abrupt changes such as having the hair relaxed or straightened, or employing nonfrizzy waves. New looks excite them. And now that hair care products and salon services provide more-practical ways to experiment on hairstyles for any kind of hair texture, they try out brand new looks that are already very accessible.
