Just like there are a variety of hair styles, there are a variety of hair types. Anyone is capable of achieving their desired hair style, however the best way to go about it is different based on your specific hair type. Thick hair may require more time and attention than thinner hair for certain styles, while thin hair may be more difficult to work with for others. For example, thick hair can be spiked just like thin hair, but requires the use of different products and techniques.

Instructions

    1

Wet your hair, shampoo it and then rinse it clean. If your hair is shorter than three inches out from your head, do not use conditioner. If your hair exceeds this length, use conditioner sparingly, focusing on the roots. While conditioner may contribute overall to the health and appearance of thick hair, it tends to decrease the effectiveness of strong styling products like the ones you will be using to spike your hair.

    2

Gently towel-dry your hair. Thick hair should still be fairly wet while you are styling, because it is easier and more manageable this way. Your hair should be dried just enough so that no water drips from the ends.

    3

Generously apply an extra or maximum hold gel to your hair. Work the gel product through your hair from root to tip, so that it is thoroughly coated and gooey to the touch. Next, begin twisting the sections of your hair that you wish to spike, raising them straight out from your head. Continue until you have covered all the sections that you desire to spike. Repeat the process. Lifting your hair away from your scalp while you twist it will speed things up in addition to being consistent with your sectioned off spikes. This should be done until gel is stiff and thick hair is spiked and resistant to motion.

    4

Use hair spray to coat your spikes. Hair spray products should be extra or maximum hold, preferably with an aerosol nozzle for optimal coverage and even distribution of the product throughout the hair.
