Beauty pageants are a time for showcasing beauty, poise and talent. The Miss America pageant is a major spectacle with millions of people watching each year. One important aspect of beauty pageants is hair and makeup. Because contestants are on stage and in front of cameras, hair and makeup are exaggerated and over-the-top. Healthy, lustrous hair showcasing contemporary styles is vital when competing in the Miss America pageant.
Long and Layered
Long, layered hair with a slight wave is appropriate for Miss America contestants. Hair is considered long when its length is midway down the back. Hair should have layers throughout, starting right above the chin. The layers in front are angled toward the face. If the hair is straight, using a flat iron or a large-barrel curling iron will create a slight wave. Volume is important so make sure that the hair on top isn't too flat.
Loose Curls
Long hair with loose curls also works well for a Miss America pageant. The hair should be just past mid-back length. If the hair is not naturally curly, or even if it is, create spiral curls with a medium-barrel curling iron. Spritz the curls with hairspray. Once the hair is dry, run your fingers through the curls to loosen them up and make them look soft and fluffy.
Half-Up
A half-up, simple yet elegant hairstyle is perfect for the Miss America pageant. This works well on hair that is medium-length or longer, straight or wavy. The hair can either be straight or wavy but wavy hair with volume is more pageant-like than pin-straight hair. To create the style, pull back the top part of the hair, including the bangs and the hair located an inch above the ears. Secure all this hair with a decorative clip. Use a curling iron or hot rollers to create curls or waves in the hair. Make sure to use a shine spray afterward to make it look vibrant.
Bobbed and Wavy
Contestants with shorter hair may want to consider a bobbed hairstyle. A pageant hairstyle for shorter hair is a wavy, long bob. The hair should be cut into a bob hairstyle with the ends of the hair just touching the tops of the shoulders. Have long layers cut into it so that it frames the face. Long bangs are suitable but avoid shorter ones. To style the hair, use a hair straightener to give it a smooth, polished look. Afterward, use large hot rollers to further smooth out the cuticle and impart just a bit of wave in the hair. Finish it with a light mist of hairspray and a shine serum.
