How to Tease or Back-comb Your Hair

When today's grandmothers were young, teasing hair was a standard hairstyling method to achieve the voluminous height for styles of the day. Eventually, hair teasing fell out of favor, but teasing is back, stronger than ever. Although teasing your hair may seem tricky or overwhelming, once you understand the basic technique, you can quickly master teasing or back-combing your hair. With the height you create by teasing, you can style your hair into elegant and trendy styles

Instructions

Flat iron your clean and dry hair to straighten it completely before you tease it. If your hair is already straight, omit this step. Curly hair does not tease well.

Brush your hair completely to remove any tangles.

Use the tail end of the rat-tail comb to separate a 1- to 2-inch-wide section of hair at the crown of your head. Clip back the rest of your hair to keep it out of the way.

Comb the section of hair straight up and hold it firmly at the ends with one hand.

Position the teeth of the rat-tail comb at the ends of the section of hair and lightly comb the section of hair backwards down toward your scalp. Instead of moving the comb through the entire section of hair, take small backward strokes at the hair with the comb until you work your way all the way down to your scalp. Repeat the back-combing process again if your first passes through the section did not achieve enough fullness.

Spray the teased section of hair lightly with the hairspray and lay it down on your scalp.

Separate another section of hair in the same size and repeat the teasing process with this section of hair. Spray the section of hair when you finish teasing it and set it aside.

Continue teasing small sections of hair until you tease your hair as much as you desire.

Blend the teased sections of hair together gently with your fingers when you finish teasing and spray them all together lightly with the hairspray.

Style the teased hair as you desire. Pulling it back into a ponytail or adding a headband both look attractive with teased hair.
