How to Make Layered Hair Bounce

Layered hair bounces easily because it lightens the weight of the hair. According to Karen Marie Shelton of Hair Boutique, hair stylists lift the hair at different angles to achieve proper layering. A 45-degree angle forms a moderate layer, while a 90-degree cut all around the head is considered an all-over layered hair cut. The upper or first hair layers typically meet at the chin for medium or long hairstyles, then the other layer lengths are increased depending on the overall length of the hair. Layering helps with texture problems, such as fine hair or split ends, but long coarse hair benefits from all-over layering. Once your hair is cut into layers, it bounces with only a few steps.

Instructions

Shampoo and condition your layered hair as usual. Towel dry damp hair if you have straight medium-length to long hair. Comb out tangles, or brush your hair with a paddle brush.

Blow dry hair on high without using a brush with your head upside down. Turn your head right side up and continue blowing hair and style with fingers for longer hair. This works well for thinner hair textures.

Curl and hold a round brush under a section of short layers, if you have short to medium-length hair. Start with the top of the crown. Blow dry the area you are holding the brush to. Pick up a section from either side of the crown with the round brush and blow the area. Continue around all the hair, including any bangs.

Smooth on pomade at the ends of your bouncy hair, or spray on shine spray to the ends only.

Shampoo and condition your layered curly hair as usual. Towel dry damp hair if you have curly medium- to long-length hair. Comb out tangles while the hair is still wet to prevent frizziness.

Work an almond-sized amount of leave-in conditioner and hair gel for curly hair while the hair is damp. Use more if your hair is very long and full.

Push a diffuser onto the blow end of your blow dryer. Diffuse your hair all over until it is almost dry. This works for layered hair that is short or long hair. Let your hair dry naturally for a bouncy look.

Spray an anti-frizz spray to keep curly and layered hair bouncy all day or for your evening out.
