How to Style a Bouffant

The bouffant hairstyle, made popular in the 1960s, is achieved by backcombing ("teasing") to give hair extra height and width. The bouffant can be left down (think Jackie Kennedy), or it can be pinned back for a more finished look.

Instructions

Apply styling gel to washed, damp hair. Take small sections of hair and, placing the roller at the top of the section, roll the hair downward toward the scalp in a backward direction. Do this until all sections of hair are in rollers.

Dry your hair completely, either by blow drying or air drying.

Take the rollers out, and backcomb the hair by lifting two-inch sections of hair straight up and using a fine-toothed comb to comb the sections down toward the scalp. This creates "lift" (height) for the hairstyle.

Lightly brush the surface of the hair back to smooth the top layer of hair. Lightly brushing hides the backcombing.

Spray hair all over with hairspray to hold the style.
