There are plenty of ways to incorporate braids into a hairstyle without using tons of styling product, spending hours on the design, or consulting a stylist. Many braided hairstyles are both quick to style and work well with many hairstyles. Braids are perfect for dressing up a plain hairstyle or incorporating into a fancy updo for a special event. Try out these easy braid styles for your next outing or party.
Pigtails
Though they may sound a bit old fashioned, braided pigtails are just as popular in the 21st century as they were back in the Little House on the Prairie days. The trick is to keep the pigtails low (below the ears) as opposed to the Pippi Longstocking look of two braids protruding from either side of the head. Use a spray bottle filled with water and add in about a teaspoon of salt. Spray the mix onto dry, unwashed hair (for the best texture) and loosely braid. Secure at the ends with a thin, hair-colored tie. A flower behind the ear or decorative barrettes add a delicate, feminine touch to this style, particularly for special occasions.
Ponytails
Turn the common ponytail into a work of art by incorporating a braid. Sweep your hair back into a ponytail that sits high on the head, leaving out only about an inch of the longest part from the center-back of your hair. Secure the ponytail with a tie that matches your hair color then set to work braiding the left out piece of hair. Once completed, use a tiny hair rubber-band to hold in place and begin wrapping the strand around the base of the ponytail. Continue wrapping until the original hair tie is completely encircled by the braid. Secure with a hair-colored bobby pin on the underside of the ponytail and hairspray for lasting results. Use a curling iron to add a few waves to the ponytail hair if desired.
Long Hair
Long hair is perfect for creating a laid-back boho style with braids. Simply pull out an inch or two of hair from each side of the face, braid individually in the direction of the back of the head, then secure the braids together at the nape of the neck. This style is perfect for a summery, beach-inspired look and coordinates well with styles that incorporate curls or waves.
Greek Goddess Braids
Greek goddess braids involve a little extra work, but it's still a relatively quick style to achieve. This style is appropriate for basically any event. Start with an updo or bun at the back of the head with one French-braided section of hair framing each side of the face. Join the braids under the updo/bun or work into the style to create a seamless look. You may need a friend or family member to help out the first couple of times, especially if you're new to French braiding, however with a little practice the style is both quick and elegant.
