How to Spike a Hairstyle

While the quintessential spiked 'do is the punk-look Mohawk, this style is not appropriate for a lot of everyday settings. If you want to add a bit of spunk to a short haircut, but don't want the all-out Mohawk, try giving a gentle spike to the hair without plastering it with gel or mousse. A textured, classy hairstyle that has loads of movement is set off perfectly by a bit of a spiky feel to give it a modern edge.

Instructions

Apply a quarter coin-sized amount of mousse or gel to towel dried hair, concentrating on the ends.

Apply volumizing product to the roots of the hair. This will help give the spikes height, without making them stiff all the way through.

Attach the diffuser to the hairdryer and set to a light heat.

Work sections of hair, pulling the hair directly up, or over and up while the hairdryer is blowing lightly. Work the back sections so they stand up higher and straighter, while the front sections can stand to an angle or lean to one side creating movement in the hairstyle.

Spike the hair around the sides of the face vertically, but don't give them much volume: try to get them to sit flatter against the skull, for a more structured look.

Apply liberal amounts of hairspray to the hair once the spikes are set the way you want them. Don't be afraid to twist sections of hair together to create a more textured look.
