How to Make Twisty Ponytails

To put a twist on the regular ponytail, a twisty ponytail still contains the elegance and hair-taming abilities of the original ponytail, while adding an exciting characteristic to the ponytail hairstyle. Though the characteristics of the ponytail and the twisty ponytail are similar, the extra steps taken to make a twisty ponytail can make for a completely new hairstyle in a matter of minutes.

Instructions

Choose between a comb or brush, depending on the length, coarseness and style (curly, straight or wavy) of your hair. This will be the item you use most often when styling your hair.

Use both of your hands to pull all of your hair into a group at the middle of the back of your head. This should make it look like an original ponytail--or similar to a horse's tail. Hold this in one hand.

Use the other hand (the dominant hand works best) to comb the area between your hairline and the ponytail until it is smooth. If there is a bump in the hair, simply run the comb or brush over it until it's smooth, making sure to end each brush stroke in the area where the ponytail is being held.

Use a rubber band or similar hair tie to hold your ponytail. Wrap it around the ponytail until it is at a comfortable level of tightness. A comfortable level of tightness should be strong enough to hold a ponytail without coming loose, but not tight enough to be painful for the scalp.

Use the loose hair in the original ponytail (behind the rubber band/hair tie) and separate it into two groups of hair. Use a comb if necessary to make each side easy to manage.

Take one side of the separated hair and twist until it's tight. Tie the end with a rubber band. Repeat with the other section. Make sure it is twisted tight enough that you cannot twist it anymore, but not so tight that it will hurt your head or pull your hair.

Take both twisted sides and twist together, wrapping the two sections around each other. Do this until the two sides are twisted from the top to the bottom of the ponytail.

Remove the two hair ties from the end of the two sections, making sure that the twisted ponytail does not unwind. Hold the ends with your hands to ensure they do not unravel.

Place one hair tie on the end of the twisted ponytail, tying the two ends of the separated sides together with the one tie.
